The proposed network
Within the Harrogate and Knaresborough area there is a need for a network of
business routes suitable for shopping and commuting journeys, and trips to and from the local schools. These routes must be constructed and maintained to the highest standard, properly lit and surfaced, and usable in all weathers and throughout the year. They must also be as direct as possible. There is also a need for a network of
leisure routes, to encourage more people to take up cycling, and to tempt back those cyclists who have been put off by dangerous road conditions. These routes also need to be to a high standard, and in particular they should be suitable for families. The Harrogate Cycle Group has proposed a network of such routes, and is advising and assisting the local council in their implementation.
In the longer term it is also the intention to link the towns of Harrogate and Knaresborough with some of the
surrounding attractions. A northern route over the Nidd Gorge viaduct would allow a safe route to Ripley and onwards into Nidderdale, and a southern route connecting with the Spofforth to Wetherby cycle path would link up with the National Cycle Network.Harrogate Council has produced a
progress report showing what's in place so far (a 67 Kb PDF file).
