The Formation of the Group
The Harrogate Cycle Group
was formed in 1999 to co-operate with the Harrogate Council in the design and
provision of cycle facilities for the Harrogate and Knaresborough area.
Since then we have been
campaigning for better cycle facilities, surveying possible cycle routes,
talking with local landowners, and generally working to improve conditions for
the local cyclist.
Regular meetings with the
council allow us to pass on our suggestions and results, and to monitor the
schemes that the council is proposing. After many such meetings a 'Cycling
Implementation Plan' was published by the Harrogate Borough Council, in
partnership with Harrogate Cycle Group and North Yorkshire County Council. This
was adopted as Council Policy by the Public Works Committee in July 2000.
A milestone was reached in
February 2001 when it was confirmed that £400,000 has been allocated for the
provision of the Harrogate and Knaresborough Cycle Network for each of the next
five years. The Cycling Implementation Plan was singled out for special praise,
and may be used as a blueprint for other rural towns.
That's a total of 2
million pounds! The group must now ensure that this money is spent wisely.
